Job Description:

Provides strategic and operational leadership for specialty pharmacy services across UofL Health. Oversees specialty operations, medication access, accreditation, and growth initiatives. Drives performance across clinical, financial, and market-facing functions, including payer and manufacturer relationships.

Essential Functions:

Specialty Operations & Strategy

  • Lead specialty pharmacy operations, call center, and access services
  • Develop and execute growth strategies, service expansion, and performance improvement
  • Establish and monitor KPIs across clinical, operational, and financial outcomes

Medication Access & Affordability

  • Oversee prior authorization, reimbursement, and access programs
  • Partner with clinics to improve patient access and reduce delays
  • Collaborate with finance to monitor denials and optimize reimbursement

Accreditation & Compliance

  • Maintain specialty pharmacy accreditation and regulatory compliance
  • Lead quality programs, reporting, and required governance structures

Market Development & Partnerships

  • Support payer contracting and preferred network participation
  • Build manufacturer relationships and secure access to limited-distribution drugs
  • Analyze reimbursement and negotiate contract terms with leadership

People Leadership

  • Lead pharmacists, technicians, and access teams
  • Build capabilities aligned to specialty pharmacy standards and growth

Financial Management

  • Oversee financial performance, budgeting, and pipeline forecasting
  • Develop business cases to support program growth and sustainability

Other Qualifications

Operational & Clinical Responsibilities

  • Execute hospital and pharmacy policies; support development and ongoing review
  • Oversee pharmaceutical care delivery, including staffing and clinical services (rounding, clinics, monitoring, dosing, stewardship)
  • Serve as a clinical role model and resource for staff
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, and development
  • Maintain required competencies in sterile and non-sterile compounding, including hazardous medications
  • Perform quality assurance activities and resolve operational issues (e.g., dispensing systems)
  • Support investigational drug studies and provide coverage as needed

Communication & Collaboration

  • Communicate effectively with patients, providers, and interdisciplinary teams, clearly articulating clinical recommendations
  • Build strong, collaborative relationships across departments and participate in committees
  • Contribute to a positive team environment and demonstrate professionalism and integrity
  • Attend and lead relevant meetings and service line discussions

Initiative & Professional Practice

  • Demonstrate independent judgment, accountability, and attention to detail
  • Support program development, education, and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Maintain current knowledge of clinical and professional trends

Compliance

  • Adhere to all organizational policies, regulatory requirements, and HIPAA standards
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Additional Job Description:

Education:

  • Graduated from an ACPE accredited College of Pharmacy (required)

Experience:

  • Post-Graduate Year 2 (PGY-2) Specialty Residency plus two (2) years of experience in specialty area OR
  • Post-Graduate Year 1 (PGY-1) Pharmacy Residency plus three (3) years of experience in specialty area OR
  • Five (5) years of experience in specialty area
  • Two (2) years of leadership experience (preferred)

Licensure:

  • Active and unrestricted licensure as a pharmacist from the Kentucky Board of Pharmacy, or eligibility for license with the expectation of obtaining an active and unrestricted pharmacist licensure prior to job start date. (required)

Certification:

  • Current board certification by Board of Pharmacy Specialties® or Certified Specialty Pharmacist certification required (required)
  • Current Apexus Certified Expert Credential (preferred)
